It is a general thank you. By now many of you have learned that Roger Morris, founder of DC Doubles and the driving force for expanding the Lincoln Memorial courts, passed away last week after a long bout with cancer. Roger was my dad. I want to express__substg1.0_0E1D001E*2 __substg1.0_1000001E*#)3 __substg1.0_10090102*hN __substg1.0_1035001E*&(B how much all of your emails meant to him in has last few weeks of life. He received many very moving letters from both old friends and many whom he had never met. It was truly amazing to see how much his work had directly affected so many people's lives. He was overwhelmed by the response and really passed knowing he left a legacy he could be proud of. I can so vividly remember my playing days at the mall. Dad taught me the game when I was about 11 and started bringing me to the (then 4) mall courts on the back of his motorcycle as a young and very raw teenager. If I remember right, we played "Mens B' in the first ever DC Doubles that was held on the 3rd Street courts. We took 2nd place. In those early years I really enjoyed helping him organize and then later run the tournaments. Many of you may remember my mom's famous cookies and brownies that she would bring down for the players. It was truly a famly effort and a labor of love for all. At some point my game got better than his but we still played in several DC Doubles together. I continued to spent a ton of time at the mall courts during my years playing for Maryland. What I remember most were so many great people who accepted me as a young kid and who then became my playing partners and friends. Volleyball continues to run through my life and family. I met my wife of 18 years at the local volleyball hang out here in Mammoth Lakes, Ca. I started teaching my daughter, Cassidy, the basics at age 10. She has had 3 years of organized ball at her middle school (which my wife and I helped coach) and will be playing high school ball next year. Fortunately, my dad was able to see Cassidy and I play beach doubles last summer in Santa Cruz and was also able to see her play with her middle school team last fall before he became too sick to travel. By the way, she had 14 straight serves (10 aces) in that match as they beat the rival school (storybook, yes!). To know that the courts are still being used so much and that my dad is remembered by so many had made his passing easier for my whole family. I hope someday to bring my daughter down to the place where it all began. Who knows, maybe we'll even get in a game or two. That is, if she'll still play with me! Best to all, John Morris Roger O. - this is for you. I know you spearheaded gettting the info out about my dad and for that I will always be grateful. I really cannot tell you how much the flood of email lifted both my dad's and mom's spirits. It was like finding a long lost friend. I don't think my dad had a clue that he was so remembered. Also, kudos to you for keeping DC Doubles alive! I know from experience how much work it is - not to mentioned getting screwed by the weather so often! I would like to buy a DC Doubles t shirt for myself and my daughter when you next have a tournament. Please let me know how I about doing that.
